Orthopedic and Trauma Findings - Examination Te...

This book is a practical, step-by-step guide to orthopedic examination and diagnosis. The author explains a systematic classification of clinical findings that has proven very useful in diagnosing orthopedic disorders in daily routine. The approach to examination begins with a checklist covering the complete patient history, including subjective descriptions of complaints. This is followed by a stepwise approach to physical examination of the patient and collection of clinical findings. Photographs and illustrations clearly depict the necessary examination techniques. The main symptoms are then determined from the patient history and clinical findings, leading to a diagnosis. An overview of all relevant orthopedic conditions for each region of the body facilitates differential diagnosis and thereby completes the examination findings. This book will be of particular value for new residents in orthopedics and trauma but will also be useful for the experienced physician as a means of refreshing knowledge or as a reference. Andreas Roth is a Professor and Head of the Division for Total Joint Replacement and Orthopedics, Hospital and Policlinic for Orthopedics, Trauma and Plastic Surgery, University Hospital Leipzig, Germany. Dr. Roth completed his MD and doctoral thesis at Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena. He subsequently specialized in Orthopedics (1992) and in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (2007) and completed his Habilitation in 2006. Dr. Roths clinical focus is on arthroplasty of large joints (esp. severe deformities, revisions), tumor surgery, musculoskeletal osteology, and conservative orthopedics. His research interests include ingrowth of endoprostheses/bone grafts, wear and particle disease, minimally invasive implantation of endoprostheses, treatment of atraumatic necrosis of the femoral head and diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr. Roth is Head of the Osteology divisions of the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC) and the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU), and a board member of both organizations. He is the lead or co-author of more than 50 peer-reviewed original articles as well as six previous books.

Rotator Cuff Tear - Pathogenesis, Evaluation an...

This handbook provides detailed, state of the art information on simple and complex rotator cuff tears that will be of value in daily clinical practice. It covers all relevant aspects, including basic science, pathogenesis, clinical and instrumental evaluation, and treatment techniques. Drawing on the results of recent studies, the book will enable the reader to better understand how tears occur and what treatment should be employed in different circumstances. Rotator cuff tear has always attracted great interest because it may cause shoulder pain, loss of strength, simple or complex disabilities, and partial or total inability to work, reducing quality of life. The goals of cuff repair are to restore footprint anatomy with biomechanically secure, tension-free construction that promotes biological healing at the tendon-to-bone interface. Even today, there is cause for discussion about when and how to perform surgical repair and on what to do in cases of irreparable rupture. This book casts light on such issues. It is especially designed for shoulder surgeons and rehabilitation specialists and will also be of value for residents and shoulder fellows. Stefano Gumina, MD, PhD, is Professor in Orthopedics and Traumatology in the Department of Anatomy, Histology, Legal Medicine and Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Since 2008 he has worked as an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in shoulder surgery, at the Clinic of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Sapienza University of Rome. His interest in shoulder disorders and surgery dates back to 1990 and is reflected by the publication of numerous papers in Italian and international journals. In 1997 he became an Associate Member of the European Society for the Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow (ESSSE/SECEC). In 1999-2000 he served as the Presidents Secretary of the Italian Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SICSEG) and in 2001 he was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the society. In 2000 and 2001 he spent periods as a fellow at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Rush Presbyterian-St Lukes Hospital at Chicago. In 2001 he was nominated as an Ordinary Member of ESSSE/SECEC. In 2003 he obtained his doctorate in Physiopathology of the Skeletal Apparatus, focusing his attention on shoulder disorders. In September 2005 he organized in Rome, with Professor Postacchini, the 19th Congress of ESSSE/SECEC, and in 2006 he was nominated as a Corresponding Member of the American Shoulder & Elbow Surgeons. He is currently Vice President of SICSEG (Italian Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery).

Tumors of the Sacrum - Diagnosis and Treatment ...

This book provides an up-to-date overview on the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and imaging characteristics of sacral tumors, discusses the available treatment options, and reports the published outcomes. The diagnostic roles of conventional radiology, CT, and MRI are thoroughly described and imaging appearances are compared with the histologic features. The coverage of therapeutic approaches includes chemotherapy, radiotherapy, radiosurgery, and surgery (partial or total sacrectomy and spinopelvic reconstruction). Special attention is paid to the specific anatomic constraints that make tumors in this region of the spine more difficult to manage effectively than those in the extremities and the mobile portions of the spine. All components of the sacrum can give rise to benign or malignant tumors, which pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Although these tumors are often diagnosed at an advanced stage, good clinical outcomes may be achieved if an aggressive multidisciplinary approach is used. This book will be of value for a range of practitioners; it will assist in prompt diagnosis and help to overcome lack of familiarity with the required treatment strategies. 1.
